Who should be tested for the current infection?

  • People with COVID 19 symptoms.
  • People who have had close contact with people with COVID 19 should be tested for infection.
    • Fully vaccinated individuals should be tested 5-7 days after the last exposure.
    • People who are not fully vaccinated should be tested immediately if they are found to be in close contact. If the test result is negative, it should be retested 5-7 days after the last exposure or immediately if symptoms appear.
  • Unvaccinated people who participated in activities at high risk of COVID 19 because they cannot be physically distanced as needed to avoid exposure such as walking around.
  • An individual who has been asked or referred to be tested by a health provider, state, tribe, external symbol of the area, or the local health department.

The CDC recommends that anyone with signs or symptoms of COVID 19 be tested, regardless of vaccination status or previous infection. If you are being tested because you have symptoms or may have been exposed to the virus, stay away from other pending test results and follow the advice of your doctor or public health worker.
